While most of the modern kitchen concepts put emphasis on saving space in your kitchen, John Arndt’s Flow system takes a huge leap from this very point by placing the importance on curbing the wastage of valuable resources in the kitchen. Taking inspiration from the cyclical flow of nature, the Flow system consists of different elements sharing a symbiotic relation between each of them.

The concept was developed by John Arndt for his Postgraduate thesis at the Design Academy of Eindhoven NL. The Flow system is a composite mixture of different elements that work in unison to tackle the issue of wasteful use of resources in kitchen.

The water from the dish rack drips on the herbs and edible plant which are grown in the planter boxes placed below the rack. The counter top features a built in waste bowl which can be utilised to dump the scraps while preparing the food. Once the bowl is full, it needs to be tipped to transfer the waste in the worm bin composter which lies beneath the counter top. As the waste is lowered into the composter, the worms convert it into nutrient rich fertilizer which can be put back into the plants.

We all talk about optimum utilization of natural resources, but seldom do we find any any actual connection between what we preach and what the designs have to offer. In this regards, John Arndt’s Flow system is a pioneering effort which tackles the issue in a simple yet effective manner.
