Some fashions never die. Designer Miguel Mila’s Cesta lantern is one of such time-tested antiques that remains equally nostalgic and romantic as they did five decades back.
Inspired from the traditional Meditteranean coastline homes, Miguel Mila’s original Cesta was made of cherry wood structure and a light bulb from inside. By the mid-sixties, Cesta had undergone few changes — it was now made of Manila canes and plastic light balls. The major innovation came in 1996 when Santa & Cole used heat-curved cherry wood and an opal crystal ball to enclose the bulb. Cesta now had an adjustable dimmer to allow varying the intensity of it’s glow.
Reason why Cesta survives is it’s simplicity and lightweight that is combined with elegant grace and beauty. Simple to carry, they can be moved just anywhere — your living room or dining table or just hung them off the roof — their glow has an inbuilt romantic charm you always wanted! Reminiscent of the navigation culture, these lamps were used to signal the sea-farers returning home along the Spanish coast.
